Context and Reflection
The assignment that I have chosen to revise is a paragraph from our historical fiction projects. This paragraph is answering the question, how historically accurate is James and Christopher Collier’s description of the winter at Valley Forge compared to The American Journey? I chose this piece because It was one where I had made many mistakes. I want people to see how I changed those mistakes. The mistakes were mostly grammar, spelling, etc.
The Piece
In My Brother Sam is Dead, James and Christopher Collier’s description on the winter at Valley Forge was fairly accurate compared to the authors of The American Journey. The Colliers’ describe who was at Valley Forge and where it was. Tim, the main character, said, “The Continental Army was encamped at a place called Valley Forge out in Pennsylvania somewhere ….. From what we’ve heard they were practically starving and hadn’t any clothes.,” (Colliers 168). The starvation and lack of clothing, were only a few of the horrid conditions that the soldiers of the Continental Army had to put up with during the winters of the war. The authors’ of The American Journey’s description mentions more of the suffering that the soldiers had to face. The authors wrote, “Washington and his troops endured a winter of terrible suffering. They lacked decent food, clothing, shelter and medicine. Washington’s greatest challenge was keeping the continental army together,” (Appleby et al 162-163). The American Journey also includes why the Continental soldiers were lacking so much during the winter. It states, “Because it was difficult to get supplies delivered due to snow storms and damaged road, The Continental Army built huts and gathered supplies from the countryside.” (Appleby et al 162-163).
About the Author
Hi. My name is Eh Thehday Paw. I am a student at Dewitt Middle School. I think that I have improved my writing skills a lot compared to last year. Before this year, if I was given an assignment, I would just write down what I needed to write down without caring about the details. Now I have learned to be more sensitive about details and I have learned better ways to write.
