How I changed as a writer

Context and Reflection

For my final exam I decided to rework my Slice of Life story. This story is titled The Pet Search. I chose this piece because this story means a lot to me, and one of my best writing this year. Most of the revisions I made were to the grammar, I also added some details and fixed my spelling.

Writing Piece

A couple years ago I was pet less. My cat had just died and I was devastated. We were visiting my mom’s childhood friend. After our visit, we wanted to stop at an animal shelter on our way home. We looked at a bunch of adorable dogs hoping to adopt a dog, but we didn’t have much luck.
We saw a bunch of friendly dogs, but there was a minimum age requirement on who could adopt them because the dogs were too shy. Later we saw a dog named Waffle. He was a pitbull mix. We thought he was really cute and took him outside for a trial. He slobbered all over my face and knocked me down.
“Yuck” I yelped! We decided not to get Waffle, for other reasons as well.
We saw an adorable puppy but she was shy and my mom and I didn’t feel a connection with her. We had just given up, but then the person who was helping us look around showed us the best dog we had seen. I saw her before but she was on a leash so I thought she was owned by somebody else. She was a German Shepherd Chihuahua mix. She was a rescue from Mississippi. The reason she was on a leash instead of with the other dogs was because she had Kennel Cough, but we didn’t care so we bought her.
Her original name was Nina but we named her Cheddar because she loves cheese and has pointy ears.

About the Author

I’m Emilia Stockwell. I’m a student at Dewitt Middle School. I love to write about myself and make it creative as possible. I was a better fiction writer as a sixth grader, but I have grown on my life event stories.
