Cousins: English Final Slice of Life

Reflection:

For this assignment I have chosen one of my slice of life from earlier in the year. I chose this piece because it was one of my favorite pieces from this year but it also had a lot of GUMS errors and detail needed to be added which was good in this case because editing is part of the assignment. I think the detail edits really made it easier for a reader to understand and picture what happens in the story.

Piece:
Cousins

I was falling asleep when I heard the door squeak open, but jumped up. My uncle walked in with my younger cousin Milo and baby cousin Ainslie Grace. I ran over to her and my face lit up, I hadn’t see her for so long and she was getting a lot bigger, but she was only eight months old. The last time I saw her she was two months old. I picked her up from her car seat and held her. She didn’t fuss or cry, she just looked at me with her big, round, dark eyes. It was like she remembered me, and I couldn’t have been any happier. When my uncle was on his way out I walked into the kitchen with her so that she wouldn’t see him leave, and start crying. I walked with her around the house, and stopped and looked in the mirror, just the two of us together. We took pictures and she gnawed on my phone case because she was teething. We walked into the living room and I laid out a blanket for her to play on. I gathered some of her toys and we sat together playing with them for a while. She eventually got bored of her toys and started to cry, indicating she wanted to eat. “Nonna” I called. “ Can you make Ainslie a bottle?” Within five minutes my Grandmother walked in with a warm bottle and I sat on the couch feeding Ainslie. I looked down at her and she had fallen asleep, she fell asleep in my arms, and we sat there, quiet and happy.

About the Author:

My name is  Asa Zannella, as a student I am pretty confident in most of my classes. Last year I was very confident in math and social studies and I felt okay about science. But English was very different, I never felt like my writing was good enough and I never asked questions because I didn’t want my teacher to read my writing. This year I have personally become a stronger writer and I feel much more confident about my pieces thanks to Ms.Cernera. We did a lot of writing this year and that alone has boost my confidence more than I could have ever thought.
