My English Evolution

Context
I wrote an entirely new thank you letter to my English teacher, Ms. Cernera, for helping me develop as a reader, writer, and person. I chose this topic because it was very kind of Ms. Cernera to give me extra help throughout the year. I really appreciated it. It was pretty easy for me to write this essay because I genuinely wanted to thank Ms. Cernera for all the aid she has given me. All I had to do was write how I felt about Ms. Cernera.

My 7th Grade English Evolution

Dear Ms. Cernera,

I would like to thank you for all of the help, support, and advice you have given me throughout my 7th grade reading and writing career. I extremely appreciate all you did for me. You helped with not just my development as a reader and writer, but as a person too. It was one of the nicest things any teacher has ever done for me. I truly appreciate it!

You really helped me develop as a writer. When I first walked into my 7th grade English class, I had almost no idea how to craft a good essay. However, you have aided me in my path to become the best writer that I can be. For example, in my first slice of life I ever wrote, I wrote an entire three paragraphs with countless errors. I spelled words wrong, my punctuation was horrendous, and my sentences were incomplete. I came in for lunch and you sat with me and we went through the entire piece of writing and edited, deleted, and turned the paragraph upside down to make it great. When I finished, I felt spectacular. You really made an impact on me that day and I will never forget it. You have truly changed my perspective about writing and where concrete writing skills can take you in life.

You also helped me develop into a well-rounded reader. You helped me find new books that I like when I could not find any myself. You have shown me that there are more groups of reading than just fiction and nonfiction. There is fantasy, historical fiction, sci-fi, and poetry – an almost endless amount of writing is out there just waiting to be read.  I believe it is truly incredible. You inspired me to read more than just fantasy. You helped me find new kinds of books that I think are cool but are not all about magic. You taught me that reading is more than just homework. Reading is fun and all reading is fun, not just fantasy. You opened my eyes to that.

As much as I am grateful for you helping me with my reading and writing, I am most grateful for your role in the advancement of me as a person. You have been one of the biggest emotional influences in my academic life. You were more than a teacher to me. You were my friend.  You believed I could be amazing in things like NanoWrimo when I did not believe in myself. You helped me read all the classic books my parents gave me by helping me relate my own life with the life of the characters in the books.

Ms. Cernera, you have been one of the most thoughtful and helpful teachers I have ever had. It has been a tremendous pleasure being your pupil and learning an expansive amount of knowledge about grammar and punctuation, as well as life skills like perseverance, optimism, and teamwork. It is with the greatest pleasure that I thank you from my heart. You have made my seventh grade year incredible. Now, I can rejoice in my education and development as a reader, writer, and person. You have helped me progress in ways even I could not imagine before this year.  I have had a great time this year.

Sincerely,
John Saunders
About the Author

Hi everyone, my name is John Saunders. I am a 7th grader at Dewitt Middle School. I am a very optimistic student and I strive to be the best English student that I can be. I have improved as an English student so much since last year. For example, I really like to read fantasy books. My favorite book is Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone by J.K. Rowling. Even though I love to read fantasy books like Harry Potter, my teacher helped me get through classical books like To Kill a Mocking Bird, The Catcher in the Rye, Lord of the Flies, White Fang, and Treasure Island.   My parents suggested that I read these books.  I also have progressed as a writer. Last year I would have needed at least two full pages of information and a lot of guidance and help from a teacher to start forming a three paragraph writing piece. Now I can do this on my own.  This, in my opinion, is a tremendous improvement.
