Context and Reflection
I have chosen a slice of life for my submission. Slices of life are short and fun to write, they are also my favorites. I'm mostly posting this slice of life because it was the most descriptive out of all of my other ones, and I sort of find it funny. I also chose this piece because it was one of my favorite moments in the past. It was back when my family and I went on a trip to Mexico. It was literally the most fun I had ever had. The cruise we went on to get there was even more fun, but there is no real way to squeeze five days into a slice of life. But if I could I definitely would. We had so many fun adventures that wouldn't make sense if they were all told in different sections. I had to choose what was the most fun and memorable about the trip and carefully insert it into a slice of life. It was so hard for me to choose which story was the most fun.
Slice of life: The Ocean
The sunlight was harsh, the ocean stretched far beyond the eye can see, glistening.

“ Solé!” my sister yells. “Don’t go in the water without me okay? I’ll be in the bathroom.” As she turned to leave, I ran for the ocean. The sand felt hot beneath my feet, and when my feet hit the water it was ice cold. I waded into the water until I was mostly used to it, and eventually it felt somewhat warm. As I stood in the water I kept my arms crossed, it was still a little cold. My entire body was submerged up to my shoulders.
“ Look Solé! Fish!” my step dad yells, pointing towards a large rock. As I look over at the rock, I saw slimy green algae attached to it, and below the slime was a yellow cluster, there were fish. As I was about to go get a closer look, I felt a sharp pain in my foot. A small stone. As I reach down to grab it, a small silver blob touches my hand, another fish! I gasp to see lots of tiny fish swimming around me. The silver slimy fish surrounded my legs, they swam in smallish groups all around my feet. I stood there stunned, they aren't even scared of me! I thought. As I was just about to reach out and touch a fish, an annoying shout sounded from behind me.
“ Solé! There are fish everywhere!” I turn to see my sister splashing in the water.
“ You’re gonna scare the fish!” I yell, but a moment too late. The fish were gone. For some strange reason, I didn't feel angry. I was tired, my little sister scared away all of the fish because she was scared of them. I didn't feel like dealing with her, the fish, or the ocean. As I waded out of the water, small sand particles stuck to my feet. My towel was covered in sand and unusable, so I decided to go dry off in the sun on one of the beach chairs, and close my eyes to bask in the sunlight.
About the Author
To be honest I think I improved a lot since last year. I was awful at writing stories, and my grades weren't the best, but I improved. My grades this year were better, and my slices of life got lots o f positive feedback.
